    Albert Sidney Johnston was an American general in three different armies: the Texian (i. e. Republic of Texas) Army, the United States Army, and the Confederate States Army.

    Albert Sidney Johnston was born on February 2, 1803, in Washington, Kentucky, the youngest son of Dr. John and Abigail (Harris) Johnston.

    Education

    After studying at private schools, Johnston matriculated at age 15 in nearby Lexington at Transylvania University, which operated one of the foremost medical schools in the country before the Civil War. There he was a conscientious student.

    Career

    In 1821–1822 Johnston altered his career path from medicine to the military and gained appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he befriended future Confederate president Jefferson Davis. Once again he excelled in his studies, graduating 8th in a class of 41 cadets in 182
